The Springhare or Springhaas

The South African kangaroo, the Springhare or as known in Afrikaans the Springhaas. Which can jump to a height of 2 meters, using its long hind legs and tail, quite an achievement for an animal that is only around 40cm long, excluding its tail which is about 30cm in length, they weigh about 3kg.

Their diet consists of plant matter and insects, they are mainly nocturnal but also forage for food during the day by digging in the numerous burrows they have created in their territory. A pair of Springhares typically have a home range of about 300 meters. They are known to leap out of their tunnels at night and then jump around on their hind legs looking for food.

The Springhare females will give birth to one baby two or three times a year.
